Frequently Asked Questions
-
Can Defcon PPF be applied on signs or non-vehicles?
Yes. Defcon paint protection film installs on any smooth painted surface, which is why sign writers use it on signage and other painted assets, not just vehicles.
-
How long does Defcon PPF last?
Defcon ONE carries a 12-year limited warranty and Defcon Glanz a 10-year limited warranty, covering yellowing, staining, bubbling, peeling and cracking. Full terms are on the warranty page.
-
Is it safe to use detailing clay on Defcon PPF?
Yes, detailing clay can be used to remove stubborn contaminants. Always lubricate the surface with soapy water or a dedicated clay lubricant before gently rubbing the clay bar over the film. For tougher stains like insect residue or bird droppings, products like Simple Green work well as a lubricant.
-
How should I maintain Defcon PPF?
No special maintenance is needed beyond regular cleaning.
-
Can Defcon PPF be applied on chrome surfaces?
Yes, Defcon films can be installed on chrome. Keep in mind the protected chrome surface might look slightly different than the bare finish. We suggest testing a small patch first to see how the film alters the appearance.
-
Will Defcon PPF yellow over time?
Defcon ONE film is backed by a 12-year warranty against yellowing and other common film issues. Proper care and maintenance will help maintain clarity throughout its lifespan. Full terms are on the warranty page.
-
Are coloured paint protection films available?
Defcon Spectra colour PPF is available in over 200 colours across gloss and satin finishes. See the Spectra colour range or contact your local Defcon representative.
-
How deep a scratch can Defcon PPF self-heal?
The self-healing clear coat on Defcon films is about 13 microns thick. Minor scratches that only affect this top layer will repair themselves with exposure to heat (sunlight or warm water). However, scratches that cut through the clear coat won’t heal and require film replacement.
-
Can I buy precut Defcon PPF kits?
Defcon film is supplied in full rolls and cut in-house by installers using OEMC pattern software; precut kits are not part of the range. See how cutting software and plotters handle patterns in-house.
-
Can Defcon PPF be installed on windscreens?
No. Due to the optical properties and impact absorption of the film, it can cause visual distortion when applied to glass surfaces like windscreens.
-
How much does Defcon PPF cost?
Prices vary based on installer rates, location, and coverage area. Contact your nearest authorised Defcon Films installer for an accurate quote.
-
What should I do if my installation isn’t satisfactory?
Start by contacting your installer to discuss your concerns. Defcon supports a network of installers who stand behind their work. If unresolved, you can reach out to Defcon’s customer support to escalate the issue.
-
Can I cover my entire vehicle with Defcon PPF?
Yes, Defcon PPF can cover any smooth painted surface on your vehicle, from full body wraps to partial coverage.
-
Can I apply a coating over Defcon PPF?
Yes, you can. As the film manufacturer, we accept no responsibility for the results of third-party coatings applied over our products. We make our own ceramic sealant for this job, Defcon Veil Ceramic Sealant, and we recommend it on every Defcon PPF surface. Apply it to clean, dry film one panel at a time: spray a light mist, spread it evenly with a soft applicator, then buff to a clear finish with a microfibre cloth. To order Defcon Veil Ceramic Sealant, contact us.
-
Can I use automatic car washes after installation?
Yes, but only after waiting at least 7 days post-installation, in line with the warranty care conditions.
-
Is it safe to use solvents like Acry-Solvent on Defcon PPF?
Xylene-based solvents like Acry-Solvent won’t harm the film if used sparingly and wiped quickly. For stain removal, lightly dampen a microfibre cloth and wipe the affected area for a short time, then let it dry before repeating if necessary.
-
Can I use pressure washers?
Pressure washers are safe to use after the film has fully cured (allow 7 days), but avoid directing high-pressure water directly at the film edges.
-
Will ceramic coatings affect Defcon PPF’s self-healing?
Ceramic coatings can be applied over Defcon PPF and do not interfere with the self-healing layer, though third-party coatings sit outside our warranty. Different coatings may alter the finish’s gloss level. We recommend consulting with your installer and using coatings designed for use with paint protection films. For what each layer does, read PPF vs ceramic coating.
-
Does removing Defcon PPF damage the vehicle’s paint?
Modern factory paint adheres to the vehicle panel far more strongly than Defcon PPF adheres to the paint, making it very unlikely that removal will damage original paint if done correctly. We recommend professional removal using heat to soften adhesive and minimise residue.
-
Can Defcon PPF be applied over vinyl wraps or racing stripes?
Yes, PPF can be applied over vinyl or graphics. Be aware that hard edges might trap air underneath the film. Comparing the two films? See PPF vs vinyl wrap.
-
Can Defcon PPF be installed on headlights and fog lights?
Yes, Defcon films are suitable for protecting vehicle lighting surfaces.
-
What cleaning products work best on Defcon PPF?
Use gentle, film-safe, pH-neutral cleaners to keep the surface clean and slick.
-
Can Defcon PPF be applied over paint touch-ups?
Yes, but for best appearance, touch-up areas should be smooth and professionally buffed before film application.
-
Can Defcon PPF be installed on interior glossy panels?
Yes, it can be applied to smooth interior surfaces, but care should be taken to avoid electronics and switches during installation.
-
Can Defcon PPF be installed on brand-new vehicles?
Yes, factory paint is typically fully cured before leaving the assembly line, making it suitable for film application.
-
How do I remove adhesive residue after DIY film removal?
Use a general-purpose adhesive remover safe for automotive paint, available at auto parts stores.
-
Does the Defcon warranty transfer if the vehicle is sold?
Yes. The warranty transfers to subsequent vehicle owners while a valid e-Warranty record exists. Full terms are on the warranty page. See e-Warranty for how registration works.
-
Can removed film be reused?
No, once removed, the film cannot be reapplied to another vehicle.
-
Can Defcon PPF be installed on aluminium or brushed metal accents?
Yes, though the film may slightly alter the appearance. We recommend testing a small area before full application.
-
Can film be installed over dealer-applied waxes or sealants?
It’s best to remove waxes or sealants before applying PPF, as these can interfere with adhesion. If such products are desired, apply them after film installation.
-
Can vinyl stripes be installed on top of Defcon PPF?
Yes, vinyl can be applied over cured film, and removed later without damaging the PPF.
-
Why does paint protection film sometimes appear distorted when viewed with polarised sunglasses?
This is due to differences in refractive indexes between the film and the paint, especially on curved surfaces where the film is stretched thinner. It’s a common optical effect and not a defect.
-
Does applying PPF void a new-car warranty?
Applying paint protection film does not normally affect a new-car warranty in Australia: the film is removable and protects the factory paint rather than modifying it. Keep the installation invoice and e-Warranty record, and check the vehicle handbook if in doubt.
-
What is the micron thickness of Defcon PPF?
Defcon gloss and satin films measure 190 microns ±10% in total, about 7.5 mils, including a 13-micron self-healing top coat: thick enough to absorb stone chips while stretching over curved panels. Full numbers are in PPF film specifications explained.
-
Is Defcon PPF available wholesale?
Yes. Defcon Films Australia supplies PPF film wholesale to approved trade accounts Australia-wide, with pricing visible after login and free shipping on orders over $3000 ex. GST.
