Colour PPF vs Vinyl Wrap: How Spectra Changes the Restyling Quote
For years a colour change meant vinyl, and protection meant a separate clear PPF job on top, if the customer could stomach paying twice. Colour paint protection film collapses those two quotes into one. Defcon Spectra is the colour line in the Defcon range: more than 200 colours across gloss and satin, at PPF-grade thickness, with a self-healing top coat and a 7-year limited warranty. Here is what that does to a restyling shop’s quote.
One film, two jobs
Vinyl changes colour. Spectra changes colour and protects. Because it carries the same PPF construction logic as the clear lines, stone chips and wash marks become the film’s problem rather than the paint’s. A shop that used to sell a wrap and then talk the customer into clear film over the bonnet now sells a single job that does both, and the customer walks away with factory paint untouched underneath.
Why it lays down like paint
Spectra is designed to deliver an OEM paint-like finish rather than a wrap look. PPF-grade thickness gives panels the depth of a sprayed finish, and the self-healing top coat repairs light scratches under heat. At that thickness the film absorbs the stone chips that tear vinyl, and it removes cleanly without damaging the paint when the owner wants a change.
Gloss and satin from the same range
Every colour family runs in gloss and satin, so a workshop can quote a gloss colour change and a satin variant from the same range with the same warranty. Selected colours are available on 18 m rolls, and trade buyers order through the colour PPF wholesale program, on the same trade portal as the clear PPF range.
Three things to set at quoting time
First, patterns. Precut patterns from OEMC software cover colour film the same as clear, which keeps panel cutting off the paint. Second, existing vinyl. Spectra can be installed over existing vinyl or graphics where needed, but hard edges can trap air under the film, so inspect the car and set expectations before the customer signs. Third, warranty. Spectra is backed by a 7-year limited warranty under normal use and proper installation, and each roll and installation is registered through the e-Warranty system. Quote it as a warranted product, because it is one.
When vinyl still makes sense
Short-term promotional wraps and printed graphics are still vinyl jobs. The full comparison, including where each product fits, is on the PPF vs vinyl wrap page. For a customer who wants a colour they will keep for years on a car they care about, the conversation has changed.
Frequently asked questions
Does colour PPF protect against stone chips like clear PPF?
Yes. Spectra is built at PPF-grade thickness with a self-healing top coat, so it absorbs the impacts that tear vinyl and heals light scratches under heat.
How many colours are available?
More than 200, in gloss and satin finishes. The colour range is on the Defcon Spectra page, and trade buyers can order through the colour PPF wholesale program.
Can I test Spectra before committing to full rolls?
Request a free sample roll and run it through your own process, or order the Defcon Practice Pack to train on real film without using customer stock.
