TESLA MODEL Y PPF
Front end or full car, gloss or satin, and what to do about the glass roof.
Most Tesla Model Y owners start with PPF on the front end, the bonnet, front bumper, headlights, front guards and mirror caps, because that is where stone chips land on Australian highways. A full-car wrap adds the doors, rear guards, boot lid and rear bumper, which matters more for cars parked on the street or driven on gravel. Defcon Glanz is aliphatic TPU at 190 microns ±10% with a 13-micron self-healing top coat. This page covers front end or full car, gloss or satin, and what to do about the full glass roof.
Front End Or
Full Car
Most Model Y owners start with the front end: bonnet, front bumper, headlights, front guards and mirror caps. That is where stone chips land on Australian highways. A full-car wrap adds the doors, rear guards, boot lid and rear bumper, which matters more for cars parked on the street or driven on gravel.
Either way, the film is the same. Defcon Glanz gloss PPF is aliphatic TPU at 190 microns ±10% with a 13-micron self-healing top coat, so light swirl marks from car washes fade with heat.
Gloss Or
Satin Finish
Clear gloss keeps the factory look. Defcon Frozen satin PPF turns gloss paint into a satin or matte finish without touching the paint underneath, and it comes off again when the owner wants the original look back.
The silver-grey Model Y on this page is wrapped in Frozen satin film. The same car with clear gloss film would look like it left the factory.
The Glass
Roof
The Model Y has a full glass roof, and standard PPF is not made for glass. Defcon Crystal Shield is an optically clear film made for windscreens and EV glass, with a 3-year limited warranty. For heat and glare, CoolVue window tint comes in five VLT grades. Check your state's tint rules before tinting side and rear glass. The window tint laws guide lists the VLT limits by state. Another EV with the same glass roof question is the BYD Sealion 7.
Warranty You
Can Check
Glanz and Frozen carry a 10-year limited warranty. Each Defcon roll is serialised, and the installer registers the job on e-Warranty within 7 days of invoice, so the owner can see which film is on the car.
Ask your installer which film they are using and whether the job will be registered. A warranty you cannot look up is hard to claim on. Read the full terms on the warranty page.
For Installers
Quoting A Model Y
Defcon sells film by the roll at 1.52 m x 15 m, with prices listed ex. GST in the online shop and free shipping on orders over $1000 ex. GST. The roll size guide shows how to work out jobs per roll.
OEMC pattern software and the DFA Plotter let a shop cut pre-cut kits in-house instead of buying them.
Not sure which film line to stock? The PPF brands comparison lists the specification rows worth checking for any brand.
UV Tested
In Australia
ARPANSA, the Australian radiation safety agency, tested Glanz clear TPU film in Melbourne: 99.0% of UV blocked, reference UVR_25-0370-1.

Washing A Car
With PPF
Hand wash with a pH-neutral car shampoo and a soft mitt. Keep a pressure washer nozzle well back from the film edges and never aim it straight at an edge.
Ceramic coating can go on top of PPF for easier washing. The PPF vs ceramic coating guide explains what each one does.
FAQ
-
Should I get full PPF or just the front end on a Tesla Model Y?
The front end covers the panels that take most stone chips: bonnet, front bumper, headlights, front guards and mirror caps. Full-car film adds protection from scratches and car park damage on the rest of the body. Daily highway drivers usually start with the front end.
-
Can I make my Model Y satin without repainting it?
Yes. Defcon Frozen satin PPF changes a gloss finish to satin and protects the paint at the same time. It can be removed later to bring back the gloss.
-
Can PPF go on the Model Y glass roof?
Standard PPF is not designed for glass. Crystal Shield is the Defcon film made for windscreens and EV glass.
-
How thick is Defcon PPF?
Defcon Glanz gloss film is 190 microns ±10% in total, about 7.5 mils, with a 13-micron self-healing top coat.
-
What warranty comes with Defcon film on a Model Y?
Glanz and Frozen carry a 10-year limited warranty, registered per car on e-Warranty within 7 days of invoice. Full terms are on the warranty page.
-
Does Defcon install the film?
No. Defcon supplies film to installers. Ask your installer which film they use and whether the job is registered on e-Warranty.
-
Where do installers buy Defcon film?
In the online shop, by the roll, with prices listed ex. GST and no account needed to order.
