PPF Roll Sizes: How Width and Length Decide Your Film Yield

A standard PPF roll from Defcon is 1.52 m wide and 15 m long, which is 22.8 square metres of film. The width decides which panels go on in one piece and how tightly patterns nest across the roll. The length decides how many jobs you finish before the tail is too short to use. Quote from the linear metres a job pulls off the roll, not from the painted area of the panels, because the offcuts are film you paid for too.

Roll sizes across the Defcon range

Every clear and satin paint protection line in the Defcon shop is listed at one size. Glanz, Frozen, FleetArmour and Crystal Shield each show one roll per unit at 1.52 m x 15 m. Spectra colour PPF lists the same 15 m standard roll plus an 18 m extended roll for selected colours. CoolVue window tint is listed at 1.52 m x 30 m.

Film line Listed roll size Film per roll
Glanz gloss PPF 1.52 m x 15 m 22.8 m²
Frozen satin PPF 1.52 m x 15 m 22.8 m²
FleetArmour gloss PPF 1.52 m x 15 m 22.8 m²
Crystal Shield EV glass film 1.52 m x 15 m 22.8 m²
Spectra colour PPF 1.52 m x 15 m, or 18 m in selected colours 22.8 m² or 27.36 m²
CoolVue window tint 1.52 m x 30 m 45.6 m²

The area column is the listed width multiplied by the listed length. The bulk PPF rolls page adds that buying by the carton does not change the PPF spec, only how much film you hold in stock.

How roll width decides seams and nesting

Width is the fixed dimension. A piece can run as long as the roll allows, but it can never be wider than 1.52 m. Any panel whose shorter side is under 1.52 m can take a single piece, and our 4WD film guide notes that the width covers a full tray side or a long sill in one piece on most utes. A panel that measures more than 1.52 m in both directions needs a seam or a different plan. Measure roofs and wide bonnets when you quote.

Width also sets how patterns nest. Plotter-cut work places several pieces side by side across the 1.52 m, so a bumper section and a pair of mirror caps can share the same stretch of roll. Bulk installs cut a rectangle larger than the panel so the edges can be wrapped, and whatever sits beside that rectangle becomes an offcut unless another panel fits it.

Defcon supplies film in full rolls and does not sell precut kits, so the nesting happens in your shop. Patterns come from OEMC Pattern Software and are cut on the DFA Plotter, a workflow described on the cutting software and plotter page.

How roll length turns into jobs per roll

Length is where the money is counted. Each job consumes a run of roll measured in linear metres, and that run is longer than the panels strictly need because nesting is never perfect. The number to track is yield: the area of film that ends up on the car divided by the area pulled off the roll. One linear metre of a 1.52 m roll is 1.52 m² of film, so a job that pulls 4 m has used 6.08 m², whatever the panels add up to.

Here is the arithmetic with made-up figures. Suppose a front-end set nests into 4.2 linear metres. That is 6.38 m² off the roll. If the cut pieces total 5.1 m², the yield is 80 per cent and the remaining 20 per cent is offcut. Three of those sets use 12.6 m of a 15 m roll and leave a 2.4 m tail. Your own figures come from measuring what the plotter feeds, or what the cutter pulls, for each job type.

Record linear metres per job for a month. Jobs per roll is 15 divided by your average run, rounded down, and the remainder is the tail. Divide what you paid for the roll by 15 and you have a film cost per linear metre to multiply by each run. Labour is a separate line, covered for satin work in how to quote satin PPF.

The 18 m Spectra roll gives 3 m more to work with in the colours that offer it. If a full colour change on a given vehicle nests to more than 15 m, the longer roll keeps the job on one roll instead of opening a second for the last panels. The quoting side of colour work is in colour PPF vs vinyl wrap.

Offcuts, stock records and the measurement rules

Offcuts are stock. Set a minimum size worth keeping, for example anything that still fits a mirror cap or a door cup pattern, and bin the rest. Label each kept piece with the film line and the roll it came from. The Glanz listing describes each roll as serialised and registered through e-Warranty at installation, and the bulk rolls page says each roll and each vehicle is registered within 7 days of invoice, so film on a car should always trace back to a roll.

Film on the shelf is also trading stock at tax time. The ATO’s simplified trading stock rules let a small business with aggregated turnover under 10 million dollars a year skip a formal stocktake when it estimates that the value of its trading stock changed by 5,000 dollars or less over the year. A handful of unopened rolls bought before 30 June can move a film shop past that figure, and then the general rules and a count apply. Ask your accountant which rule fits your shop.

Measurement has a legal side too. The National Measurement Institute states that trade measurement laws apply to all retail and wholesale transactions where measurement determines price. business.gov.au adds that a business caught short-measuring customers can be fined, and it names measuring tapes used to work out the length and price of fabric as equipment that must be an approved type. Most PPF work is quoted by the panel or the package. If you do price anything by the metre, the measurement has to be right.

Handling a 1.6 m carton in the workshop

Each PPF roll listing gives shipping dimensions of 160 x 15 x 15 cm and a weight of 10 kg. CoolVue, with twice the length on the core, is listed at 12 kg. The length is the awkward part: a 1.6 m carton carried through a doorway or lifted onto a high rack puts the body in a poor position.

Safe Work Australia defines hazardous manual tasks as lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling or carrying that involves factors such as sustained or awkward postures or high or sudden force. It says a person conducting a business must assess and manage the risks of manual tasks, and that good work design is the most cost-effective control. In a film shop that points to racking cartons between knee and shoulder height, close to the plotter.

The quickest way to learn your own yield is to cut real film. A free sample roll is enough to load a bonnet pattern, measure the run and see what is left over before you commit to cartons.

Frequently asked questions

How many square metres are in a PPF roll?

A Defcon PPF roll listed at 1.52 m x 15 m holds 22.8 m² of film. The 18 m Spectra roll offered in selected colours holds 27.36 m², and a 1.52 m x 30 m CoolVue window tint roll holds 45.6 m². Usable area is lower once nesting gaps and edge allowances come out.

How many cars can one PPF roll cover?

It depends on the linear metres each job pulls. Divide 15 by your measured run for that job type and round down. A full wrap on a large vehicle can run past a single roll, so measure the nesting before you promise the job from stock.

Does Defcon sell precut PPF kits?

No. Defcon’s cutting software and plotter page states that film is supplied in full rolls and cut in-house with OEMC pattern software, and that precut kits are not part of the range.
